After the contracts were signed in April 2015, Manitowoc started manufacturing in earnest in May 2015 and deliveries started arriving in Nigeria from all over the world in November 2015 all through till last week of January 2016. The material arrived in several consignments and delivered to the site and proper mobilization for installation service which was where we was our responsibility started in February 2016.
But before then, some preparations has been made, which included training our people in all the major aspects required for successful installation and commissioning. This involved sending our technical crew to Effiage in France to learn about Rail installations, then to Sweden to learn more about how to install service and maintain the Cab lift an innovation that vertically transports the crane operators from the ground to the operating cab several meters above the ground, in the sky in record time.
The major scopes of this project were
- Manufacturing the Crane to specifications and delivering to site
- Rail Installation
- Travelling Cable Channel Installation
- Installation of the Travelling Tower Crane
With the invaluable guidance of Manitowoc the KING OF AFRICA was finally commissioned on January 16th 2017
Today that crane stands as the biggest tower crane in Africa and we are happy to be involved with this. We have learnt a whole lot on this project. Before now the biggest tower crane in Nigeria was an MD345 also made by Manitowoc, but this MD345 is nothing compared in size to this King of Africa Tower Crane. It is a significant project for us and on our own part we think that having executed the installation and commissioning of this project, we are today in a competence class that is unrivaled in Nigeria and reckon in the WORLD as far as Tower Cranes are concerned!
Considering that they are ONLY THREE TOWER CRANES OF THE SAME CLASS BIGGER THAN THE KING OF AFRICA today WE ARE VERY PROUD AND FEEL PRIVILEGED TO HAVE BEEN SADDLED WITH THE RESPONSIBILITY OF INSTALLATION AND COMMISSIONING THE SECOND BIGGEST TOWER CRANE IN THE WORLD AND THE BIGGEST IN AFRICA!
We are humbled to have gained this GLOBAL RECKON!
For people familiar with Tower Cranes or construction equipment, they would understand that a tower crane is the most significant construction equipment on any site and having gained this experience, it means that we are able to serve our customers better, faster as most of the other things they would be requiring would be simply be a piece of cake for us to execute.
Our ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Certification was of INVALUABLE utility in the execution of this project and we also used the opportunity to apply and gain the OSHAS Occupational Safety Health Assessment Scheme 18001:2007 Certification.
